Project Summary

Excessive gestational weight gain (eGWG) increases the rates of serious maternal-fetal complications, including gestational diabetes (GDM) and childhood obesity. New approaches to prenatal health care delivery are needed to promote better outcomes for mom and baby. Knowing today’s tech savvy moms expect the latest personalized information at their fingertips, we will evaluate the SmartMoms-Canada mobile Health (mHealth) program - designed to help women adhere to the GWG guidelines, improve maternal-fetal health, and halt the cycle of obesity. SmartMoms-Canada; an innovative, efficient, and scalable mode of delivering a pregnancy-specific lifestyle program in real-time, has the potential to revolutionize prenatal care.

Project Objective

Overarching goal: To determine the viability of delivering a pregnancy-specific mhealth app-based lifestyle
program (SmartMoms-Canada), designed to improve gestational weight gain (GWG) management, thereby reducing cardiometabolic risk in mom and baby.
Primary objective: To determine if the SmartMoms-Canada mHealth app-based lifestyle program results in a
clinically significant reduction in excessive GWG vs. a historical control.
Deliverable: If SmartMoms-Canada is found to be an effective adjunct to standard care, our goal is to work with
our partners to integrate this mHealth program into prenatal care and help alleviate the economic burden of
serving Canada’s geographically and economically diverse population.
